Supervision

Inspected by Københavns KommuneWhat eight children and three adults look like to somebody from the outside

We are eight children and three adults, with a room for playing, a room for sleeping and a place to eat. An inspector from the kommune comes to see what that is really like - announced, and unannounced. Here is everything they wrote.

Most daycares tell you they are warm and attentive. We would rather show you the arithmetic that makes it possible, and then hand you the notes of somebody who came to check. An inspector goes through the staffing plan, the criminal-record and child certificates for every adult and the list of children, and then spends the morning in the room.

One morning with us

What 2.7 children per adult actually looks like

The children had been out in the courtyard all morning. They came in from the playground
expectant, looking through the pane; when the door opened they all ran in happily. It was
lunchtime, so everyone went past the bathroom to wash hands first. Every child found their place,
some needing a little help getting up onto the chair. Boiled vegetables, pasta and fish
frikadeller. They ate with good appetite, mostly by themselves, with an adult nearby for whoever
needed one.

Twenty minutes later they were down on the floor, taking the inspector round the drawings on the
walls, several of them explaining their own and clearly very proud of it. One adult sat down and
read to a group. Another was in the bathroom. Another cleared up after lunch. The inspector wrote
that it was clear they each had their own task, and that it was agreed between them.

That is the whole point of the number. Three adults means one of them can sit on the floor and
read for twenty minutes while the other two carry the morning. With fewer, nobody sits down.

The assessment, in full

Translated sentence for sentence, with the Danish underneath so you can check the translation yourself. Nothing is left out.

The inspection meets positive and appreciative adults who both see and hear the children. There is a good and easy atmosphere in the setting; the children are active and happy. Many of the children are very good at telling things in English; several children approach the inspector and seem very secure in the contact. Good and relevant language stimulation is offered. Both the meal and the settling-to-sleep work well. There are good, structured and familiar routines.
